The NHP Seminar for Licensed Trainers 2013 was held on February 20th and was generously hosted by the Vintners Federation of Ireland at their Rathfarnham headquarters. The Seminar which was organised with the aim of professional development for NHP Licensed Trainers was also attended by invited guests from the hospitality and retail sectors.

Clodagh Fitzgerald, Chair of the National Hygiene Partnership opened The Seminar with a Welcome Address and introduction of the Invited Speakers for the Seminar.

Derek Carter, Learning and Development Manager, Aramark provided a very  interesting presentation “ From Training Provider to Trusted Business Partner” on Food Safety Training from the contractors viewpoint. From his insider experience Derek encouraged trainers to keep updated professionally, provide value plus for clients, ensure freshness and relevancy of training with good client communication on an regular basis.

Dr Bernard Hegarty, Director of Service Contracts, Food Safety Authority of Ireland addressed Seminar attendees on “Food Contact Packaging and Materials”. Materials in contact with food, such as food packaging, Bernard explained, can transfer some of their constituents into the food causing food contamination, health alerts, expensive food recalls, etc.  But its not just food packaging issues that can arise, food contact materials can be problematic also for utensils, plates and food processing equipment.  Seminar attendees will be watching out for the wineglass and fork symbol which denotes food contact material.

Dr Paul McKeown, Specialist in Public Health Medicine, Health Protection Surveillance Centre presented “Norovirus and the Leisure Industry” in a graphic and detailed approach to all aspects of Norovirus, from its discovery as “winter vomiting disease” in 1929 through background, causes, spread, surveillance, control and prevention. Paul advised those working in the hospitality sector on the practicalities of restricting the spread of the virus, a presumption of norovirus in the case of a vomiting episode and preparedness and training in case of an outbreak in staff or guests.

Stephen Murphy, Senior Environmental Health Officer, Health Service Executive, Cork In his presentation Stephen translated the complexities of “Regulation (EC) 2073/2005 on microbiological criteria for foodstuffs” into practical terms for the non-microbiologist trainer, consultant and food business operator. Food businesses must be able to provide a declaration of compliance with this Regulation.

The NHP Licensed Trainers Seminar 2013 concluded with an explanation, for trainers, of up and coming changes in the Assessment process of the NHP Management of Food Hygiene Programme – The Essential Guide to HACCP Compliance by Mary Gorby and the introduction of the NHP Management of Food Hygiene – The Essential Guide to HACCP Compliance Refresher Programme by Clodagh Fitzgerald.
