The Licensing Process

The following describes the process of Licensing Trainers to deliver the "Management of Food Hygiene" course.

When Phase 1, 2 and 3 are complete, please apply in writing to the National Hygiene Partnership enclosing copies of relevant certificates. Your name will be added to the applicant's list for Phase 4 and Phase 5.

Phase 1

Attend the Management of Food Hygiene Course.

Phase 2

Achieve a distinction (85%) in the written examination. This examination has a total of 40 questions - 5 descriptive and 35 multiple choice.

Total marks: 300

Phase 3

Attend the Fáilte Ireland Group Training Techniques Course and demonstrate competency in delivering selected sessions against defined and established training criteria.

Phase 4

Undergo and pass a formal assessment of the ability to administer the Management of Food Hygiene course to the required standard.  Executives of the National Hygiene Partnership will jointly conduct this assessment.  The assessment will focus on the course content, structure and its linkages to I.S. 340:1994.  It will also address topics such as group interaction, dealing with difficult situations, compiling action plans, pre and post course administration, also examination and validation criteria.

Phase 5

Deliver a session of the Management of Food Hygiene in the Hospitality Industry Programme to a group of fee-paying course participants. This session will be assessed by an EHO and a Specialist in training methodology. An overall mark of 85% must be achieved.

Phase 6

Apply for a licence to the National Hygiene Partnership.  The cost of this license is currently €145 inc. VAT @21% and this will be renewable on an annual basis subject to compliance with the renewal criteria.  

Phase 7

Purchase the Hygiene Training Pack.  This material is available on a CD-ROM that contains comprehensive Trainer’s notes, slides and Participants’ Handouts.

Phase 8

Sign an agreement with the National Hygiene Partnership to:

- Register each course
- Submit a participant list
-  Submit a registration, administration and certification fee for each Participant.

Please note:

Phases 1, 2, & 3 should be followed in a sequential order.  It is not possible to progress to phase 4 unless the requirements of phases 2 & 3 have been satisfied.  Phase 4 and Phase 5 may be combined.  Similarly, a licence will not be granted unless all the licensing criteria have been met.

The National Hygiene Partnership may grant exemptions in certain circumstances if it is considered appropriate, when individual applications are being considered.  Applicants seeking exemptions will be required to furnish copies of appropriate qualifications.

Successful candidates will be awarded a licensing certificate by the National Hygiene Partnership and will be entered into the National Register of Licensed Hygiene Trainers.

Phase 1 €350
Phase 3 €435 (Payable to Fáilte Ireland)
Phase 4 €200 (Payable to The National Hygiene Partnership)
Phase 5 €200 (Payable to The National Hygiene Partnership)
Phase 6 €145 (Payable to The National Hygiene Partnership)
Phase 7 €350 (Payable to The National Hygiene Partnership)

Total Cost: €1,680        VAT inclusive where applicable


* The above licensing fee structure may be subject to an annual increase. There are no charges for Phases 2 & 8. If it is necessary to re-sit Phase 2 in order to get the required result a fee of €50 will apply. In instances where it will be necessary to repeat either Phase 4 or 5, the full fee must be paid in advance of the repeat. Any Phase may be attempted 3 times only. Phase 6 & 7 must be completed within 6 months of Phase 5.
